Sam Powers, Senior Minister

Picture
Welcome!

I have served Piedmont First United Methodist Church as the Senior Minister since January 1, 2001.  During that time, we have grown in worship and membership each year and have relocated from our original campus near downtown Piedmont to our new building on Piedmont Road just north of Edmond Road.  It sits on almost 19 acres and is a wonderful testimony to sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Our church is one of the mainline denominations and our worship is liturgical following the church calendar such as the observance of Advent and Lent.  We take the Bible seriously and my sermons are based on scripture and its modern application for our lives.  I would not be considered a fundamentalist or a literalist in my interpretation of the Holy Bible and as a church, we are more likely to err on the side of grace than judgment.

Our church is ecumenical meaning that we understand God’s love to be at work among other denominations as well as ours.  We live this out in practice by accepting other Christian Baptism as valid (we do not re-baptize) as well as opening our table to all who come for Holy Communion (you don’t have to be a member of our church to receive this sacrament).

On a personal note, I am a graduate of Sapulpa High School and Oklahoma State University.  Following my time in Stillwater, I served as a Youth Minister for four years at New Haven United Methodist Church in Tulsa.  Then I married Sheryl Heaton of Duncan and we both attended graduate school as newlyweds.  I received a Masters of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

After graduate school, I returned to Oklahoma and was ordained in The United Methodist Church.  I served for 4 ½ years as the pastor at Salem United Methodist Church in Drummond, Oklahoma before being appointed to Piedmont.

A recent podcast interview with the Piedmont Gazette can be heard here: http://www.piedmonttoday.com/city/podcast-piedmont-daily-ep-2/

Sheryl and I have two children in elementary school here in Piedmont and our entire family is active in our church and the community.  If you would like to know more about me or our church, please email me at sam@piedmontumc.org.  It is my hope that you’ll join us for worship soon!
